As commissioned by the City of County Rank of Győr, the FŐMTERV–ENVECON Consortium led by FŐMTERV Zrt. prepared two detailed feasibility studies determining and providing grounds for transport in Győr and its suburb in the long term, under the exact titles of:
- ‘Establishment of an intermodal public transport hub in Győr’
- ‘Modification of the urban and suburban public transport system of Győr’
The target and design area of the project can be divided into three levels:
- The suburb of Győr (an about 40 km radius area around the city)
- The administrative area of Győr
- The Győr Railway Station and its vicinity
Delimitation of the ‘Intermodal hub’ project area and general technical parameters
- According to the final alternative, a new flyover for public transport (Baross Gábor Bridge) and a new road subway (Bartók Béla Subway) were constructed. There are only pedestrian traffic and public transport on the new Baross Gábor Bridge. A new subway was constructed for road traffic as a continuation of Bartók Béla út. An intermodal building constructed above the railway station is connected to the Baross Gábor Bridge.
- One hundred and sixty P+R parking spaces were constructed in the development area, of which 100 are located on the ground level to the north from the railway station, in Révai Miklós utca, and 60, to the south from the railway station at level –1 under the proposed new coach station. A B+R bicycle park was established for bicycle traffic in front of the railway station building and next to the new coach station.
- Coach traffic is served by a pair of stops established on the new Baross Gábor Bridge and the joint bus and coach station established in the area of the existing coach station. A new joint bus and coach terminal is established in the area of the existing coach terminal.
- Révai Miklós utca becomes a service road with reduced traffic. A public car park and, just like next to the new bus and coach station, a taxi station are placed in front of the railway station and in Hunyadi utca, respectively. The bus terminal ceases to exist and is replaced by parking spaces, and the pedestrian space increases.
Delimitation of the ‘Urban and suburban public transport’ project area and general technical parameters
The development of affects four suburban railway lines in Győr in total.
- On line 1, the existing tracks are not the developed or upgraded. Two new stops are constructed: Industrial Site stop and New Town stop.
- The development plans of line 8 are included in Project No. KÖZOP 2.4.0-09-2010-0003 prepared in 2012 for the construction of a second track for the Győr–Sopron–national border railway line and the preparation of the Fertőszentmiklós–Sopron–national border section (Phase I), which was treated as given by the suburban development project.
- On the current line 10, the existing track is not developed or upgraded, but the track is realigned in smaller sections in order to ensure a speed of 80/100 km/h. Three new stops are constructed on the Győr-Pápa section: Shopping Centre stop, Ménfőcsanak-Malom út stop and Győrszemere stop. In order to achieve an appropriate travelling time and to reduce process times in Győr, the section concerned has to be electrified.
- On several sections of line 11, the track is realigned and minor curve adjustments are made in order to ensure a speed of 80 km/h. Two new stops, Adyváros stop and Győrasszonyfa stop, are constructed on the section.
- The route proposed between Győr and the Marcalvárosi branch line provides direct connection to the Győr Passenger Railway Station via the GYSEV railway station and Marcalváros. The new line section passes through the centre of Marcalváros on a high embankment supported by a retaining wall, without hindering road and pedestrian traffic. A new stop was constructed at Marcalváros, which forms an integral part of rail transport in the city.
